Globus Medical Launches SUSTAIN O

Aug 10, 2006

New Offering Completes Company's Spacer Portfolio

August 10, 2006 - Phoenixville, PA, USA  PRNewswire - Globus Medical, Inc., one of the ten largest spinal implant manufacturers in the US, has announced the introduction of SUSTAIN® O. The new addition completes Globus Medical's extensive line of spacers, which includes vertebral body replacement devices SUSTAIN® Small, SUSTAIN® Medium, SUSTAIN® Large and SUSTAIN® Arch.

"Adding SUSTAIN® O to the SUSTAIN® family of spacer products allows Globus to provide a full range of options to the spine surgeons we serve," stated Bill Rhoda, Engineering Manager, Globus Medical. "We worked very closely with several surgeons in designing SUSTAIN® O, and we're particularly excited to deliver a product that is distinctive in several ways."

SUSTAIN® O is constructed of radiolucent polymer (PEEK) and is available in a broad assortment of sizes. Unlike the majority of spacers in the marketplace, SUSTAIN® O is manufactured in one millimeter increments in heights of eight through 13 millimeters, as well as in heights of 15 and 17 millimeters. The device is offered in two lengths - 26 millimeters and 30 millimeters, and two widths - 10 millimeters and 12 millimeters. SUSTAIN® O has a gripping connection, as opposed to a threaded connection, to enhance the strength of the product and offer greater maneuverability. The product is available in lordotic and parallel options.

"The unique design of the device allows for insertion in a straightforward, lateral (oblique) manner, versus the traditional transforaminal approach, which entailed extensive implant manipulation and positioning following insertion," explained Daxes M. Banit, MD, Middle Georgia Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, and a member of Globus Medical's surgeon design team. "Also differentiating the device is its unique bullet- shaped nose, allowing for both vertical and horizontal self-distraction."

Limited sets of SUSTAIN® O have been utilized in the marketplace, with the full roll out in August. "We're very pleased with the feedback we've received thus far," added Rhoda. "We're confident that this enhancement to our existing portfolio solidifies our formidable position in the highly competitive spacer market."
